After living with and using the OPPO BDP-83 universal Blu-ray disc player for a few months, I can now offer a reasonably informed opinion of this rather superb machine. When I first saw a professional review of BD-83 I thought the name a bit unusual as so many words start with OPPO! Well, like the player, OPPO has many uses. OPPOsite, as in better than virtually any player on the market, including some of the more esoteric “reflective plastic” spinners. (read expensive) availableOPPOrtunity, not one to pass up. This player is extremely good, not just good looks, but superb picture quality and very versatile audio output that has a sound quality that more than pleases with all connections; HDMI, CO-AX, Optical and of course analogue 7.1. CD's have very accurate timings rhythmically, it gives you that "want to boogie" feeling, or that sense of awe you get when attending a live classical concert. It actually blows away a £1000 CD player with out any doubt. The icing on the cake is the bonus of SACD playback. Santana's "Abraxas" SACD DSD disc is like winning the lottery in music, WOW! In fact the audio quality is way beyond most front ends that use silver discs. Standard DVD is clean, balanced and clearly better than the norm. Of course Blu-ray at 1080P with HD audio via a high quality surround receiver and a 55" LED backlit LCD TV, Phew!Fast loading BD is a real pleasure; you will get that with this player. The instruction book is almost not required as the setup is so well designed the book is mostly for reference only, but I do suggest you read it end to end to get to know what it can do.OPPO has included loads of goodies, including USB video, audio, photo and of course an RJ Ethernet port for BD if you so wish. Firmware updates are also available via this port as well as other goodies. Oh, the remote is really the biz! Two BD setup and demo discs are included, very useful. Having limited space, I will leave you to read all the specs and about the brilliant engineering that has gone into this multi player on UKHDMI'S website. Yes, it plays good quality CDR/RW, DVD /-R, RW and BDr BD-RE recordable discs with no bother at all. I'm more than pleased with the OPPO BDP-83 and at the price it's truly incredible! The OPPOsition hasn't a chance with this machine, especially with UKHDMI's almost over the top service and customer care makes the whole package such a rare pleasure these days.Don't miss this OPPOrtunity, if you buy something else you may be disappointed, or way out of pocket for something not as good. The down side ? None that cause any real problems, the mains plug at the back lacks a plastic earth pin for the IEC lead socket and is a bit loose (cured by a better IEC lead) and it could do with some damping inside the lid to make it feel and sound more solid when loading discs. The front cover for the USB socket could be better, but is adequate. After spending thousands on audio and video over the last forty years or so, I have some great gear, but nothing has given me so much pleasure as the OPPO BDP-83. Quite amazing at this, or almost any, price level. I whole heartedly recommend it.
