UKHDMI as part of Knoxed limited Group was awarded the prize for the most ACTIVE Company at CEDIA EXPO 2008 in our first attempt as exhibitors at a trade show.

Small businesses account for over half of business energy use and could offer a substantial contribution to carbon footprint reduction and that is why we at UKHDMI have a comprehensive ECO FRIENDLY policy to help in reducing the effects on the environment.

We are committed to protecting and enhancing the environment and tackling climate change - one of the most serious threats facing us today. We no longer produce unnecessary packaging for our products and this greatly reduces the impact to the environment. Not only do we recycle all our day to day rubbish but have a strict policy to only dispatch our mail order products by bio-degradable eco friendly mailing bags.

The environment is a responsibility for all of us, so whether it’s simply switching off unnecessary electrical appliances from time to time; recycling your cardboard or glass; or looking at you travel requirements; we invite you to think about your impact.

As UKDMI is a mail order company we do use degradable bags to dispatch all our products were possible. No one can know for certain how long it takes polythene to break down.  Estimates of life range from 100 years to whenever the next ice age comes.  Old polythene bags and envelopes can be found

• Persisting in landfill sites
• Polluting the landscape
• Blocking drains and sewers
• Choking wildlife

The answer is a degradable polythene envelope. The newly developed bag include an additive which is added at the beginning of the extrusion process to reduce the molecular weight of the polythene without affecting its performance.

The additive can reduce the molecular weight from 300,000 to 4,000, at which point it can be consumed by micro organisms found everywhere. The process can be carefully controlled to programme the life of the bag, according to its intended use. In time, the bags will begin to degrade in any normal environment, a process enhanced by daylight or higher temperatures. It does not need a microbial agent to initiate degradation and, in fact, degrades more readily than paper. The eventual products of degradation are water, a small amount of carbon dioxide and biomass which can be composted and used as a fertilizer.

The degradability has been measured against conventional polythene film using a series of tests which accelerate the ageing process. The tests prove that UV light, heat and moisture in normal cycles will cause the material to degrade. Chemical analysis shows that this is due to change in chemical composition with the reduction in molecular weight. The degraded product has passed the standard range of ecotoxicity tests, such as seed germination, plant growth and the survival of daphnia and earthworms.
